Alkali metals dissolve in liquid ammonia to gives ammoniated electrons.
\mathrm{M}+(\mathrm{x}+\mathrm{y}) \mathrm{NH}_3 \rightarrow\left[\mathrm{M}\left(\mathrm{NH}_3\right) _\mathrm{x}\right]^{+}+\left[\mathrm{e}\left(\mathrm{NH}_3\right) _\mathrm{y}\right]^{-}

These ammoniated electrons will absorb energy in the visible region of light and gives blue colour to the solution. These ammoniated electrons are responsible for the paramagnetic nature of the solution.  Due to the presence of free electrons their conductivity is very similar to pure metals.
