For the monatomic gas, r_{1}=1+\frac{2}{f}=1+\frac{2}{3}=\frac{5}{3};

where f = number of degrees of freedom

For the diatomic gas, r_{2}=1+\frac{2}{f}=1+\frac{2}{5}=\frac{7}{5}

f=3 for a monatomic gas and f=5 for a diatomic gas)

So, for the mixture,

r=\frac{n_{1} r_{1}+n_{2} r_{2}}{n_{1}+n_{2}}=\frac{2 \times \frac{5}{3}+1 \times \frac{7}{5}}{2+1}=1.58
