Cell Cycle: Division Phase or M-Phase (Mitotic or Meiotic Phase)

  • The G2 phase is followed by the division phase.
  • There are two types of cell division: mitosis and meiosis.
  • The division phase can be called mitotic phase or meiotic phase depending on the types of division taking place.
  • During this phase, cell divides into daughter cells.
  • The daughter cells will be identical to the parent cell if the division is occurring through mitotic division.
  • If the division is occurring through meiosis, the daughter cells will have reduced number of chromosomes.
  • The division can be summarised into two phases as:

             (1) Karyokinesis: division of the nucleus
             (2) Cytokinesis: division of the cytoplasm
