Foregut

  • Foregut includes buccal chamber having mouth on one side and pharynx on the another.
  • It also includes oesophagus, crop and gizzard. 
  • The mouth opens into a short pharynx, leading to a narrow tubular passage called oesophagus.
  • Oesophagus opens into a sac-like structure called crop.
  • Crop is the largest part of foregut and its function is to store the food.
  • The crop is followed by gizzard or proventriculus. It is small, cone-shaped and muscular.
  • Gizzard possess thick inner cuticle in the form of six highly chitinous plates called teeth.
  • The major function of gizzard is to grind the food particles.
