What are somaclones?
Somaclones are plants produced from somatic cells, also called vegetative cells. These are clones produced from somatic cells. They have identical genetic material, practically.
These cells are the tissue of the parent plant used in tissue culture techniques. It involves taking small pieces of plant tissue (explant) and growing them in a controlled environment (tissue culture) to regenerate a whole plant, which is called micropropagation. This technique allows rapid and large-scale propagation of plants from a single parent plant. Somaclones are generally genetically identical plants that can exhibit some variations that arise during the tissue culture process, known as somaclonal variation.
