Carl Linnaeus came up with the Binomial System of Nomenclature in the 18th century.

This method was first used in Linnaeus's books "Systema Naturae" (1758) and "Species Plantarum" (1753). Both books were about plants and animals. Under this method, every living thing is given a two-part scientific name:

1. The first word of the genus's name must be capitalized.

2. The name of the species (lowercase) is the second word.

For example, the formal name for people is Homo sapiens. This is the name of the species: "sapiens." The name of the genus is "Homo." This universal naming system makes sure that biological classification is the same all over the world. It also helps keep things from getting confusing because of familiar names.
