5.5. A closely wound solenoid of 800 turns and area of cross section 2.5 \times 10 ^{-4} m^2 carries a current of 3.0 A. Explain the sense in which the solenoid acts like a bar magnet. What is its associated magnetic moment?

Given,

Number of turns, N = 800

Area of cross-section, A = 2.5 \times 10 ^{-4} m^2

Current, I = 3 A

The solenoid acts like a bar magnet because a magnetic field is developed around the solenoid similar to a bar magnet

We know,

Magnetic moment, m = N x I x A

m = 800 x 3 x 2.5 x 10^{-4} = 0.6 JT^{-1}
