In regeneration, the damaged or dead cell is replaced by the same kind of cell in an organism through the process of mitosis. So, it allows restoring the normal function.

In simpler organisms, the entire body is composed of similar kinds of cells. So, any cell from any part of the body can give rise to a new individual, or one kind of tissue rise into the same type of tissue by development and growth.

In complex organisms, there is an organ level of organization at different levels which means different types of cells or tissue or makeup organ and is assigned to perform a specific function. All these organ systems are interconnected and work in full coordination. Due to this high degree of specialization, complex organisms cannot reproduce by regeneration of some tissue part.

However, they are able to regenerate a few body parts like blood, skin, muscles, etc. but they cannot produce a whole new organism.

For example, the skin of human are able to regenerate lost skin but skin cells cannot give rise to a new individual as skin cells or tissue are highly differentiated to perform a specific function.
