We can rewrite  104 \times 96  as 

\Rightarrow 104 \times 96= (100+4)\times (100-4)

We will use identity

(x+a)(x-a)=x^2-a^2

Put  x =100 \ \ and \ \ a=4

(100+4)\times (100-4)= (100)^2-(4)^2

                                               =10000-16= 9984

Therefore, value of  104 \times 96  is  9984
