$ax + by ^2 = \cos y$
We can rewrite it as
$by^2-\cos y = -ax$
Now, differentiation w.r.t. x is
$\frac{dy}{dx}(2by - (-\sin y)) = \frac{d( -ax)}{dx} = -a$
$\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{-a}{2b y +\sin y}$
Therefore, the answer is  $\frac{-a}{2b y +\sin y}$
