According to the formula of an average rate

                                                                   = -\frac{1}{2}\frac{\Delta[ A]}{\Delta t}            (final concentration - initial conc.)/time interval

                                                                  =-\frac{1}{2}\frac{[ A]_{2}-[A]_{1}}{t_{2}-t_{1}}

                                                                   =-\frac{1}{2}\frac{[ 0.4]-[0.5]}{10}

                                                                   =\frac{0.1}{20}Mmin^{-1}

                                                                    = 5\times 10^{-3}Mmin^{-1}
