Transition elements have partially filled d-orbitals. Thus general electronic configuration of transition elements is
 (n-1)d^{1-10}ns^{0-2}

Non-transition elements either have fully filled d- orbital or do not have  d- orbitals. Therefore general electronic configuration is
ns^{1-2} or ns^{2}np^{1-6}
