Thyroid gland – it is an endocrine gland present in the neck and produces two hormones and releases them in the bloodstream. These two hormones are thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Iodine from food is needed by the thyroid gland to produce these two thyroid hormones:

The level of thyroxine is controlled by the negative feedback mechanism. The pituitary gland and hypothalamus play an important role in controlling and detecting the level of thyroxine. 

So, the production of thyroxine requires iodine.
