5. What are the major causes of species losses in a geographical region?

Answers (1)

The major causes of species losses in a geographical region are as follows;

1. Habitat loss and fragmentation- Habitat loss involves the destruction, degradation, and fragmentation of natural environments into small, isolated patches of habitats mainly through human activities like deforestation, urbanization, or agriculture. Such fragmentation has adverse impacts on ecosystems by isolating species populations and diminishing biodiversity, making survival and reproduction difficult.

2. Over-exploitation- Over-exploitation is the unsustainable use of natural resources, such as excessive hunting, fishing, logging, or mining. This depletes species populations, disrupts ecosystems, and can drive some species to extinction, thus threatening biodiversity.

3. Alien species invasion- Non-native creatures that are purposefully or unintentionally introduced into ecosystems are known as alien or invasive species. They frequently cause the loss or extinction of native species by altering habitats, upsetting ecological balances, and outcompeting them for resources.

4. Co-extinction- Co-extinction is defined as the extinction of a species that causes the loss of another species dependent on it, such as host-parasite or pollinator-plant relationships. This cascading effect further emphasizes the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the far-reaching impact of biodiversity loss.
