Q

# Which is a stronger reducing agent Cr^2+ or Fe ^2+ and why ? Chapter 8

8.7     Which is a stronger reducing agent $Cr^{2+}$ or $Fe^{2+}$ and why ?

Reducing agents are those which lose the electrons easily. Here $Cr^{2+}$ or $Fe^{2+}$ ,the reduction potential value of $Cr^{3+}/Cr^{2+}$ is more than that of $Fe^{3+}/Fe^{2+}$.Hence $Cr^{2+}$ easily gets oxidised to $Cr^{3+}$ (attains $t^{3}_{2g}$ configuration). Hence $Cr^{2+}$ is better reducing agents.
