Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
LCM of 12 and 9 is 36

\\ For \ the \ 1 st \ fraction, \ since \ 12 \times 3=36$ $\frac{5}{12}=\frac{5 \times 3}{12 \times 3}=\frac{15}{36}$

\\ Likewise, \ for \ the \ 2 nd \ fraction, \ since \ 9 \times 4=36$ $\frac{4}{9}=\frac{4 \times 4}{9 \times 4}=\frac{16}{36}$

Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction

\frac{15}{36}<\frac{16}{36} \text { or } \frac{5}{12}<\frac{4}{9}
