A capacitor of unknown capacitance, a resistor of 100\Omega and an inductor of self inductance L =\left (\frac{4}{\pi^{2}} \right ) henry are connected in series to an ac source of 200V and 50 Hz. Calculate the value of the capacitance and impedance of the circuit when the current is in phase with voltage. Calculate the power dissipated in the circuit.

When current is in phase with the voltage

X_{L}=X_{C}

w_{L}=\frac{1}{w_{C}}

C= \frac{1}{w^{2}L}=\frac{1}{4\pi ^{2}50^{2}\times \frac{4}{\pi ^{2}}} = \frac{1}{2500\times 4 \times 4}= \frac{1}{40,000}=0.25 \times 10^{-4}F

C= 25 \mu F

Impedance

Z = R = 100\Omega

The power dissipated in the circuit

= \frac{V^{2}}{R}=\frac{200^{2}}{100}=400 watt
