(a) Consider a beam of charged particles moving with varying speeds. Show how crossed electric and magnetic fields can be used to select charged particles of a particular velocity?

(b) Name another device/ machine which uses crossed electric and magnetic fields. What does this machine do and what are the functions of magnetic and electric fields in this machine? Where do these field exist in this machine? Write about their natures.

Answers (1)

(a) Force F = qE + qV\times B=qE+qVB

Adjust the value of E and B such that

qE = qVB

The above condition is used to select the charged particle of particular velocity.

(b)

  • The cyclotron uses the crossed electric and magnetic field to accelerate charged particles/ions.
  • The electric field is used to accelerate the charge and magnetic field is used to move charged particle in circular path.
  • Electric field exist between Dees and magnetic field exist in both inside and outside the Dees.
  • Magnetic field is uniform and electric field is oscillating in nature.
