A deuteron and an alpha particle having same momentum are in turn allowed to pass through a magnetic field \vec{B}, acting normal to the direction of motion of the particles. Calculate the ratio of the radii of the circular paths described by them.

We know that deuteron has charge of +e and mass 2m_{p} where m_{p} is the mass of the proton,

Similarly,

\alpha- particle has charge of +2e and mass +4m_{p} .

The radius of the circular path

 r=\frac{mv}{qB}

Since momentum are same (given in the question) and B is also constant,

therefore

 \frac{r_d}{r_{\alpha}}=\frac{q_{\alpha}}{q_d}=\frac{2}{1}
