(a) Given reasons for the following:

        (i) Sulphur in vapour state shows paramagnetic behaviour.

        (ii) N-N bond is weaker than P-P bond.

        (iii) Ozone iss thermodynamically less stable than oxygen.

(b) Write the names of gas relased when CU is added to

        (i) dilute HNO3 and

(a) (i) In vapour state, sulphur partly exists as S2 molecule, which like O2 has two upaired electrons in the antibonding \pi^{\ast } orbitals and hence exhibits paramagnetic.

(ii) The single N-N bond is weaker than P-P bond because of high interelectronic repluion of the non-bonding electrons, owing to the small bond length.

(iii) O3 is the thermodynamically unstable and decomposes to O2. The decomposition is exothermic.

(b) (i) 3Cu+8HNO_{3}\overset{cold dil.}{\rightarrow}2NO+Cu(NO_{3})_{2}+4H_{2}O

      (ii) Cu +3HNO_{3}\xrightarrow[acid]{stong}NO_{2}+Cu(NO_{3})_{2}+H_{2}O
