An organic compound 'X' having molecular formula C_{4}H_{8}O gives orange - red ppt. with 2,4-DNP reagent. It does reduce tollen's reagent but gives yellow ppt. of iodoform on heating with NaOI. Compound X on reduction with LiA1H4 gives compound 'Y' which undergoes dehydration reaction on heating with conc. H_{2}SO_{4} to form But-2-ene. Identify the copounds X and Y.

  • No reaction with  tollens reagent \therefore not an aldehyde group.
  • Gives iodoform test \therefore X is a methyl ketons
  • On reduction with LiA1H_{4}, ketons gives alcohol \therefore Y is a alcohol which gives alkene on dehydration

\Rightarrow X= CH_{3}CO\, CH_{2}CH_{3} Butan -2 one
Y= CH_{3}\, CH\, CH_{2}CH_{3}  Butan - 2-oL
