Consider the molecular formula of the carbon compounds (a) and (b) given below :

(i) (a) -OH group, alcoholic

  (b) -COOH group, carboxylic group 


(ii)  (a) and (b) are not isomers 


(iii) When alkaline KMnO4 is added, drop by drop, into a test tube containing warm propanol, Propanoic acid is formed

CH3CH2CH2OH ------> CH3CH2COOH

It acts as oxidising agent
