Define an equipotential surface. Draw equipotential surfaces:
(i) in the case of a single point charge and
(ii) in a constant electric field in Z-direction.
Why the equipotential surfaces about a single charge are not equidistant?
(iii) Can electric field exist tangential to an equipotential surface ?Give reason.
Equipotential surface: A surface with constant potential at every point on the surface
(i)
The equipotential surface are concentric circles with the charge at the center.
ii)
Equipotential surface are parallel to xy plane.
Also, the electric field is not constant for a single charge.
Therefore equipotential surface about a single charge are not equidistant
(iii) if the electric field is tangential to the equipotential surface then, work will be done on moving a charge on the surface, which is against the theory of equipotential surface.
