The putting-out system was a system of domestic manufacturing that was prevalent in rural areas of western Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.The putting-out system is a means of subcontracting work, where people work in homes using their own tools such as looms and spinning wheels, using the raw materials provided to them by merchants. Thus they earn from their skills without making any investment.
