TCP ( transmission control protocol ) is a protocol for transport and is used on top of IP to guarantee the reliable transmission of packets. It has mechanisms to solve problems like out-of-order packets, corrupted packets, lost packets, and duplicate packets. 

As it is a mostly used protocol on top of IP, internet protocol stock is also called TCP/IP protocol.
