Role of different genes in a lac operon, when in a ‘Switched On’ state are:

  • regulator gene produces repressor, 

It inactivated in the presence of inducer, that is lactose, RNA polymerase then gets access to the promoter gene and transcription proceeds.

  • z gene - beta-galactosidase,

It is responsible for the hydrolysis of the disaccharide lactose into galactose and glucose.

  • y gene - permease,

It increases the permeability of the cell to ß-galactosides and lactose

  • a gene - transacetylase enzyme
