# Give reason to explain why n and p regions of a Zener diode are heavily doped. Find the current through the Zener diode in the circuit given  below : (Zener breakdown voltage is $15\; V$)

$n$ and $p$ regionsof Zener diode is heavily doped so that the depletion region formed is very thin and electric field at the junction is extremely high even for a small reverse bias voltage.

$I=\frac{V}{R}$

Here, $I=\frac{20-15}{250}=\frac{1}{50}=0.2 \; A$

Now, the current through the resistor of $1\; K\; \Omega$ is ;

$I=\frac{15}{1000}=0.015\; Ampere$

Therefore the current through the Zener diode will be-

$I=0.02-0.015$

$I=0.005\; A$
