  • Humans carry 23 pair of chromosomes that is 46 chromosomes.

  • Out of 23 pair two types of chromosomes are present :

    • Autosomes

    • Sex chromsomes

  • Autosomes :

    • Autosomes are the chromosmes other than sex chromosmes.

    • They exist in pairs and contain the same form.

    • 22 pairs of  chromosomes exist in the human body.

  • Sex chromosmes :

    • Sex chromsomes helps into determine the sex of the chromosome.

    • Sex chromosmes does not always exist as a perfect pair and can be odd at times.

    • 1 pair of chromosome exist as sex chrosome in human beings.

Determination of sex in humsn beings :

  • Women have a perfect pair of sex chromsomes , both called as X.

  • Men have a mismatched pair of chromosomes  in which one in normal sized X and other is a short one called Y.

  • Therefore, women have XX chromosome whereas men carry XY chromosome.

  • All the children will inherit an X-chromosome from their mother regardless of whether they are boys or girls.

  • Hence, the sex of the children will be determined by what they inherit from their father

  • As a result ,

    • A child who inherits the X chromosome from her father will be a girl (XX).

    • A child who inherits the Y chromosome from his father will be a boy (XY).
