(i) Describe the working of photodiode by drawing the circuit diagram.
(ii) Draw the characteristics of a photodiode for different illumination intensities.
(iii) Why is photodiode operated in reverse bias even though the reverse bias current is much weaker than the current in forward bias?
(i)
The photodiode is operated under reverse bias
When a light wave with energy
greater than the energy gap of the semiconductor
falss on photodiode, electron-hole pairs are generated due to the absorption of photon.
Due to the electric field at the junction, the electrons and holes are separated before they recombine.
Electrons and holes are collected on n side & P side respectively giving rise to an emf and a current flows when an external load is connected.
(ii)
(iii) When a reverse bias is applied it is easy to observe the change in current with the change in intensity.
