(i) Find the magnitude and direction of current in 1\Omega\ohm resistor in the given circuit.

(ii) Two students X and Y perform an experiment on potentiometer separately using the circuit diagram shown below.

Keeping other things unchanged (a) X increases the value of resistance R, (b) Y decreases the value of resistance S in the setup. How will these changes affect the position of the null point in each case and why?

Answers (1)

Apply KVL in PQRSP

6-3I_{1}-(I_{1}-I_{2})=0

4I_{1}-I_{2}=6            ............(1)

Apply KVL in STPQS

9-2I_{2}-(I_{2}-I_{1})-3I_{2}=0

I_{1}-6I_{2}=-9             .............(2)

Solving (1) and (2)

23I_{2}=42

I_{2}=\frac{42}{23} = 1.826A

\because 4I_{1}=6+\frac{42}{23}             from (1)

I_{1}=\frac{3}{2}+\frac{21}{46} =\frac{90}{46}=1.956A

Current through 1\Omega = 1.956-1.826 =0.13A

(ii)

(a) Potential gradient \propto \frac{V}{l}

Since length is increased potential gradient decreases. So null point shift towards B.

(b) V = E-I^{'}r

as I^{'} increases, V decreases. So null point shift towards A.
