If x = a, y = b is the solution of the pair of equations x – y = 2 and x + y = 4, find the values of a and b.

Answers (1)

Given x = a , y = b

 equations are

x-y = 2 ----(1)\\\\ x+y = 4 ----(2) \\\\

By adding (1) and (2), we get

 2x = 6 \\\\ x = 3 \\\\ x = a \\\\ \therefore a = 3

BY eq (2)

3+ y = 4 \\\\ y = 1 \\\\ \therefore y = b \\\\ \therefore b = 1 \\\\ a = 3 , b = 1
