In a single slit diffraction experiment, the width of the slit is increased. How will the (i) size and (ii) intensity of central bright band be affected ? Justify your answer.

Answers (1)

As we know,

width of the central diffraction band is given by

2D\frac{\lambda}{d}

where d is the width of the slit.

i) So when we increase the width of the slit, the size of the central diffraction band reduces.

ii) But, the light amplitude increases, which increase the intensity.
