Light from a sodium lamp (S) passes through two polaroid sheetsP_{1} and P_{2} as shown in fig. What will be the effect on the intensity of the light transmitted (i) by P_{1} and (ii) by P_{2} on rotating polaroid P_{1} about the direction of propagation of light ? Justify your answer in both cases.

i) The intensity transmitted by P1 is unaffected because the intensity of unpolarized light transmitted by a Polaroid does not depend on the orientation of the Polaroid with respect to the direction of propagation of light.

ii) The intensity of light transmitted by P2 will vary from I1 to zero.
 As per Malus’ Law, I=I_0cos^2\theta
Where \theta is the angle between the pass axis of the polaroid P2 and the pass
the axis of polaroid P1 .
As \theta varies from 0\ to\ \pi/2 I_2\ will\ vary\ from\ I_1 \ to\ 0
