Once a bollworm feeds on Bt cotton plant the inactive protoxin produced by Bacillus thuringiensis which is called Bt cotton, is converted into an active form of toxin and due to the alkaline pH of the bollworm's gut that solubilise the crystals, the activated toxin binds to the surface of its midgut epithelial cells, create pores and that cause cell swelling and lysis, and eventually cause the death of the insects.
