Gonadotropins-

  • Luteinizing hormone (LH)
  • follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)

In males,

  • LH stimulates testosterone release by the Leydig cells of the testes.
  • FSH promotes the growth and enhances the production of an androgen-binding protein by the Sertoli cells

In females,

  • LH stimulates steroid release from the ovaries, ovulation, and the release of progesterone after ovulation by the corpus luteum.
  • FSH stimulates the development of egg cells, called ova, which develop in structures called follicles
