Scientists tried to develop a single plant exhibiting the characteristic of tomato and potato by using cells from tomato and potato plants respectively, the procedure used is Somatic Hybridisation.
 

Process-

  1. Isolate single cells from plants and after digesting their cell walls isolate naked protoplasts (surrounded by plasma membranes).
  2. Isolated protoplasts from two different varieties of plants (potato and tomato) – each having a desirable character – can be fused to get hybrid protoplasts, which can be further grown to form a new plant. These hybrids are called somatic hybrids which combine tomato and potato characteristics resulting in the formation of Pomato.
