Significance of meiosis

Since meiosis is the reduction division of the cell, it helps for the formation of male and female gamete and hence is necessary for sexual reproduction. Meiosis helps in maintaining the ploidy of an organism since before reproduction, it decreases the amount of DNA to half and after fertilization of the gametes, the diploid character is regained. in the absence of meiosis, the amount of DNA will keep on doubling for generations.
