Deciduous plants lose their leaves to conserve water or to better survive dry weather conditions. Thus they regrow new foliage during the next suitable growing season. The ground is frozen in winter and for about five months, the temperature is below  0oC. Although some parts of trees like stems and buds can handle freezing temperatures, but most leaves cannot. So in order to protect themselves, trees shed their leaves.
