What are rods and cones in the retina of an eye ? Why is our night vision relatively poor compared to the night vision of an owl ?

Rods are sensitive to dim light and are rod-shaped, cones are sensitive to colours and bright light. 

Our night vision is not as an owl is because of the relatively low number of Rod cells present in the retina of our eyes.
