Magnification (M) is the ratio of the height of the image to the height of the object formed by a lens.

Formula:

  • hi? = height of the image

  • ho? = height of the object

  • v = image distance from the lens

  • μ = object distance from the lens

Interpretation:

  • If M > 1 → Image is magnified

  • If M = 1 → Image is same size as the object

  • If M < 1 → Image is diminished

  • If M is positive → Image is virtual and erect

  • If M is negative → Image is real and inverted
