Mutational breeding refers to the process of exposing seeds to the UV radiations or certain chemicals in order to generate mutants containing desirable traits that can further be bred with other cultivars.

Mutational breeding helps the plants to produce better quality in the following ways:

  • It can be used for polygenic traits in plants.
  • It improves morphological and physiological characteristic features of cultivated crops.
  • It can improve disease resistance in crop plants.
