When the light travels from an optically denser medium to rarer medium, light partially gets reflected and refracted. Beyond a particular angle of incidence(critical angle), the rays do not undergo refraction, and the incident ray is totally reflected. This is called total internal reflection.

Critical Angle

The angle of incidence corresponding to the angle of refraction=90 degrees is called critical angle
