The major beliefs and practices of the Sufis were:

  1. They sought union with God much as a lover seeks his beloved with a disregard for the world.

  2. They rejected idol worship and considerably simplified rituals of worship into collective prayers.
  3. They believed that the heart can be trained to look at the world in a different way.

  4. They expressed their feelings towards God through poems and a rich literature in prose, including anecdotes and fables, developed around them.
