Nitrogen dioxide is a gas.It contains two molecules of oxygen and one molecule of nitrogen. It is written as NOâ‚‚ and there are many compounds of it in which oxygen and nitrogen are combined.

Simlilarly Nitrous Oxide is written as Nâ‚‚O bcoz it has two molecules of oxygen but only one molecule of nitrogen.
So it depends on the composition of a molecule
