The period after Harshvardhana death, called a period of political instability because Vardhana empire was faced was continuously and after Harshvardhanas death there was no successor in Vardhana empire. Harshvardhana had no child to become next ruler of Vardhana empire, so Harshvardhanas empire was carved out into many small kingdoms.
