The addition of water to ethene (CH2=CH2) to produce ethanol (CH3CH2OH) is done using an acid catalyst (H). The double bond of ethene first reacts with a proton to give a carbocation on the more stable carbon atom.

Then, a water molecule will act as a nucleophile and attack the carbocation to give an oxonium ion. Lastly, the oxonium ion loses a proton to give ethanol. This is a three-step electrophilic addition reaction.
