A p-n junction forms part of a rectifier circuit. A voltage waveform as shown in figure (i) is applied to the circuit. If the diode is ideal except for a drop of 0.7 \mathrm{~V} in the forward biased condition.
Then the average heat lost in the resistance over a single cycle.

Option: 1

7.85 \mathrm{~mJ}

Option: 2

In forward bias, the potential drop across the diode is 0.7 \mathrm{~V}, and the rest of the p.d. is dropped across the resistance R(=1 \mathrm{k} \Omega).

\text { The current }(\text { maximum) } =\frac{10-0.7}{1000}
=9.3 \mathrm{~mA}

The average heat lost in the resistance over a single cycle is

\mathrm{i^{2} R \Delta t=\left(9.3 \times 10^{-3}\right)^{2} \times 10^{3} \times 10^{-1} \mathrm{~J} }
\mathrm{=8.65 \times 10^{-3} \mathrm{~J}=8.65 \mathrm{~mJ} }
