The suitcase is on the platform with zero kinetic energy, and it returns to zero when placed on the head. The change in kinetic energy is zero, so the total work done on the suitcase is zero.

There are two forces acting on the suitcase, one is gravity and the other is the force applied by the porter. Thus, the work done by the porter and the work done by gravity is opposite. When the suitcase is lifted, the work done by gravity is

W =-m g h

      \\ =-(10)(9.8)(3) \\\\ =-294 J

The work done by the porter is 294 J.
