A tank filled with water (density \rho_{w} = 1000 kg/m3) and oil (density \rho_{o} = 900 kg/m3). The height of water is 1.0m and of the oil is 4.0m. Find the velocity of efflux through a hole at the bottom of the tank.

Height of water which exerts the same pressure on the interface as whatever oil exerts:

h \rho_{w}g = 4 \rho_{oil} g

or

h = \frac{4 * 900}{1000} = 3.6 m

Effective height of water over the hole:

H = 1 + 3.6 = 4.6 m

\therefore v_{e} = \sqrt{2gh} = \sqrt{2*10*4.6}

            = \sqrt{2*46} = \sqrt{96}

v_{e}= 9.5m/s
