Answer please! - Properties of Solids and Liquids - JEE Main

A ball is made of a material of density $\dpi{100} \rho$ where $\dpi{100} \rho _{oil}< \rho < \rho _{water}$ with $\dpi{100} \rho _{oil}\; and\; \rho _{water}$ representing the densities of oil and water, respectively. The oil and water are immiscible. If the above ball is in equilibrium in a mixture of this oil and water, which of the following pictures represents its equilibrium position?

• Option 2)

• Option 3)

• Option 4)

As we learnt in

Density -

It is the ratio of mass of substance to the volume occupied by the substance while density of a body.

-

$\rho_{oil}<\rho<\rho_{water}$

Oil is the least dense of them, so it should settle at the top with water at the base. Now the half is denser than oil but less denser than ball. So it will sink through oil but will not sink in water so, it will stay at the oil water interface.

Correct option is 3.

Option 1)

This is an incorrect option.

Option 2)

Option 3)

This is the correct option.

Option 4)

This is an incorrect option.
